Verbs

dance
eat

sing
jump

What can you see in the pictures above?
They are doing something and they are moving, right?
These are the examples of a VERB.
A verb is an action word.
  • The verb is the Heart of a sentence- every sentence must have a verb.
  • The shortest sentence contains a verb. You can make a one-word sentence with a verb, for example: "Stop!

Let's look at a few more examples:

The little dog runs so fast.
Browny plays with the ball.

What's going on in these sentences? A couple of dogs are doing funny things; but what they are doing is the verb--in this case, the little dog "runs" and Browny "plays". Both show action.

The baby eats an ice cream.

eats here is the verb or the action word.

In each of the following sentences, the verb is highlighted:

  • Mark runs so fast.
  • I study English everyday.
  • Gen plays soccer.
  • Mary dances gracefully.

Nouns

What is a noun?
A noun is a naming word,

It is the name of a person

Examples: Jessica, Vicky, Mark, Father, Mother, Sister, etc.

It is the name of a place

Examples: Disneyland, Great Wall of China, Resort World, etc.

It is the name of a thing

Examples: bag, cell phone, pen, book, toys etc.

OR

FEELING

Nouns are usually the first words which small children learn.
All names are nouns. In other words a noun is a word used to name a person, a place or thing.

Try to look around you.

You can name that you see, right?

The highlighted words in the following sentences are all nouns:
  •  Yesterday our neighbors bought a goat.
  • The bus inspector looked at all the passengers' passes.
  • Portia White was an opera singer.

For clarification, Nouns are words that name people, places, things, or ideas - they are not actually people, places, things, or ideas.

What is a noun? Choose the noun from the following two pictures.

CHICKEN

The one on the RIGHT is the correct answer. Why? Well, what is a noun? It is first and foremost a word. Notice that while the photo of the chicken is the cuter of the two, it is not naming a chicken - it is a chicken.

A word is a noun - not the actual thing that the word represents.
