Vocabulary

How does vocabulary helps English learners?



  • Vocabulary assists learners in expanding their knowledge to raise achievement.
  • In order to understand  spoken or written words a student must know 95% of the words.
Now we will testify how vocabulary helps us.

react (verb): to act in response to something
Let's use react in a sentence.
Example: 
How did he react when he heard the news?
animal (noun): a living creature
Let's use animal in a sentence.
Example:
A cat is an animal.
factory (noun): a place where things are made or built
Let's use factory in a sentence.
Example: 
There is a coffee factory near in our place.
hesitate (verb): to hold back a decision, to waver
Let's use hesitate in a sentence.
Example: 
Don’t hesitate to call me if you need help.
mention (verb): to cite, to speak about, to refer to
Let's use mention in a sentence.
Example: 
You forgot to mention my name to your Mom.
passion (noun): a strong feeling or emotion
Let's use passion in a sentence.
Example: 
My brother has a passion for motorcycle racing.

CONVERSATION PRACTICE

The scenario is:
Joana wants to take the bus, but she finds herself short of money change, so she asks her brother Paul if he has some.

Joana: Do you have change for a dollar or small bill?
Paul: Yes, I have here. What do you need for?
Joana: I need some change for the bus. All I have here in my wallet is paper bills I don't have coins.
Paul: How do you want it?
Joana: I need couple of quarters and 6 ten cent coins.
Paul: Okay no problem I have it. Here's the coins that you need.
Joana: Thanks Paul, I have to go now. Bye!
Paul: Your welcome. Take care!

VOCABULARY

LIE AND LAY

You lie down on the sofa to watch TV.
Please lay the book on the table.

Do you know how to use lie and lay?
To use these two verbs correctly every time,

*you need to know things about verbs,
*you need to know the problem areas in “lay” and “lie,”
*and you need some practice


What is the difference between sentence 1 and sentence 2?

Lay means "to place something down." It is something you do to something else. It is a transitive verb.
Example:
Lay the book on the table.
(It is being done to something else.)

Lie means "to recline" or "be placed." It does not act on anything or anyone else. It is an intransitive verb.
Example: 
You lie down on the sofa to watch TV 
(It is not being done to anything else.)

The reason lay and lie are confusing is their past tenses.
The past tense of lay is laid.
The past tense of lie is lay.

I laid it down here yesterday.
(It is being done to something else.)

Last night I lay awake in bed.
(It is not being done to anything else.)

Selecting the best response helps and teaches us to respect and show sympathy to other people. This will help you also how to respond in different situation.


When ordering food in a restaurant.

a. Maybe later.
b. Give me some time, i'll call you later. Thanks!

The correct response is letter "b. Give me some time, i'll call you later. Thanks!" because it shows a good manner.

If someone gives you a gift.


What do you do if someone gives you a present?

a. You will accept it and say, "Thank you for the gift."
b. Smile and laugh

The correct response is letter "a. You will accept it and say, "Thank you for the gift." it's a sign of appreciation.

Can you tell me how to get to the bus terminal?

a. Just go straight, it's next to the pharmacy and you will reach the bus terminal. 
b. Just ask others.

The correct response is letter "a. Just go straight it's next to the pharmacy and you will reach the bus terminal. " it's giving correct direction.

  • Good morning, this is Mary.

Connecting someone: When you answer the phone and it is for somebody else.

Finishing a conversation:

Idiomatic expressions

The use of the English language can be made in an artistic way. Poems, novels and other forms of literature  have idiomatic expressions to make the readers feel the emotions in every lines. 



Idiomatic expressions are phrases or sayings that does not have the literal meaning.
It cannot be understood through knowing the meaning of  the words one by one. 

Examples

Butterfly in my stomach    - means very nervous
I was not able to speak in front on the crowd because I had a butterfly in my stomach.

means very happy

I'm on cloud nine when my teacher told me that I got the highest score on the test.
