Learning how to communicate well on the telephone is one of the top priorities for many students who need to use English at work.
Talking on the phone also requires its own special set of words and phrases. Here’s a helpful reference that will help you speak on the telephone phone with confidence in business and personal situations.
Introducing yourself:
  • May I speak with Mary Smith?
  • Hello, this is John Kim calling for Mary Smith.
Answering the phone: There are many different ways to answer your phone.
  • Good morning, this is Mary.
  • Good Afternoon, Lakeside office. How may i help you?
Connecting someone: When you answer the phone and it is for somebody else.
  • One minute, I’ll transfer you now.
  • Please hold on and I’ll put you through.
Finishing a conversation:
  • Well, I guess I better get going. Talk to you soon.
  • Thanks for calling. Bye for now.
